Yaye Tso Lake: Ladakh's Hidden Secret Off the Beaten Path

Ladakh is full of lakes, but most visitors see only Pangong Tso. Yaye Tso is what Pangong used to be before the Instagram crowds arrived — a pristine, utterly silent high-altitude lake that rewards those willing to venture a little further off the tourist trail. Set in a remote valley on the road to Pangong, Yaye Tso is a hidden gem that few visitors ever find.
Where is Yaye Tso?
Yaye Tso lies on the southern side of Chang La pass, approximately 80 kilometres from Leh on the route to Pangong Tso. The lake sits at around 4,820 metres altitude in an isolated valley that most vehicles pass without stopping — which is precisely why it remains so unspoiled. A short hike from the roadside brings you to the lakeshore.
What makes Yaye Tso special
Unlike Pangong Tso — which is shared with China and heavily regulated — Yaye Tso is entirely within Indian territory and has no visitor restrictions. The lake's extraordinary clarity means you can see the bottom even at considerable depth. The surrounding landscape of barren ochre hills, snow patches and deep blue sky creates a colour palette that feels almost surreal. In summer, migratory birds nest on the margins of the lake.
Combining Yaye Tso with Pangong Tso
The most rewarding way to visit Yaye Tso is to combine it with a Pangong Tso day trip. Stop at Yaye Tso on the way to Pangong — spend an hour or two at the lakeshore in complete solitude — then continue to Pangong for the famous sunset. This way you experience both Ladakh's hidden lake and its most famous one in a single day.
Practical tips for Yaye Tso
There are no facilities at Yaye Tso — no shops, restaurants or accommodation. Bring your own food, water and warm layers as temperatures can drop quickly at this altitude even in summer. The lake is best visited between June and September. An Inner Line Permit is required for the Pangong route — this also covers Yaye Tso.
