One of the great advantages of staying at Nature Palace Farmstay in Chuchot Shama is how well-placed we are for exploring the very best of Ladakh. Located just 25 minutes from Leh, we sit in a quiet river valley that gives you peaceful nights and easy access to world-class sights by day. Here are the top local gems our guests love most.
1. Shey Palace & Monastery (8 km)
Shey Palace is one of Ladakh's oldest and most important historical sites, just 8 kilometres from our farmstay. The site contains an impressive three-storey high copper gilt statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, one of the largest in Ladakh. The monastery complex sits atop a rocky hill overlooking the Indus valley, offering sweeping views of the landscape you can see from our farmstay. Best visited in the early morning light.
2. Stok Palace & Museum (11 km)
Stok Palace is the official residence of the royal family of Ladakh and is now partly converted into a heritage museum. The museum holds an extraordinary collection of royal costumes, jewellery, ancient thangkas and the famed peraks, elaborate turquoise-studded headdresses worn by Ladakhi queens. The Stok Kangri peak (6,123m) behind the palace is popular with mountaineers and trekkers.
3. Thiksey Monastery (12 km)
Thiksey is often described as one of the most picturesque monasteries in all of Ladakh. Its 12-storey complex rises dramatically from a hilltop, resembling the Potala Palace of Lhasa. Inside is a magnificent 15-metre Maitreya (Future Buddha) statue. We recommend attending the early morning prayer ceremony at 6 AM, an unforgettable experience of monks in ceremony against a backdrop of Himalayan mountains.
4. Hemis Monastery (40 km)
Hemis is the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, home to the famous Hemis Festival held in June or July each year. The monastery's annual festival, featuring masked Cham dances performed by monks in elaborate costumes, is one of the most spectacular cultural events in the Himalayas. The monastery also houses an excellent museum of thangkas, statues and ancient manuscripts.
5. Pangong Tso Lake (140 km)
No visit to Ladakh is complete without seeing Pangong Tso, the iconic high-altitude lake that changes colour from turquoise to blue to green across its 134-kilometre length. About one-third of the lake lies in India, the rest in China. The drive from our farmstay takes approximately 4 to 5 hours via the Chang La pass (5,360m), one of the world's highest motorable passes. We can help arrange day trips or overnight stays at the lake.
6. Magnetic Hill & Gurudwara Pathar Sahib (25 km)
The famous Magnetic Hill on the Leh-Kargil highway is one of Ladakh's quirky attractions, an optical illusion that makes vehicles appear to roll uphill on their own. A short distance away is the Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, a beautiful Sikh shrine built in honour of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, set dramatically against towering cliffs. Both are easy stops on the way to Nubra Valley.
