Zanskar Valley: Ladakh's Most Remote and Spectacular Trek

Zanskar is the kind of place that ruins everywhere else for you. This remote valley, tucked behind a ring of 5,000 to 6,000 metre peaks, feels like the edge of the world. The Zanskar River has carved one of the most dramatic gorges on Earth, ancient monasteries cling to impossible cliffsides, and the people of Zanskar have maintained a way of life almost unchanged for centuries. From Nature Palace Farmstay, Zanskar is a day's drive — or the start of a life-changing trek.

Reaching Zanskar from Leh

The most scenic approach to Zanskar is via the Srinagar-Leh highway to Kargil, then south through the Suru Valley over the Pensi La pass (4,400m) to Padum, the main town of Zanskar. The drive from Leh takes approximately 8 to 10 hours. The road is open from June to October — it is blocked by snow for the rest of the year. In winter, the only access is on foot along the frozen Zanskar River — the famous Chadar Trek.

The Chadar Trek — walking on the frozen river

The Chadar Trek is one of India's most extraordinary winter adventures. In January and February, the Zanskar River freezes into a sheet of ice — a chadar (blanket) — and trekkers walk on the frozen surface through the otherwise impassable gorge. The trek typically takes 9 to 10 days return from Chilling and passes through towering ice walls, frozen waterfalls and remote Zanskari villages accessible only in winter.

Phuktal Monastery — the cave monastery

Phuktal Monastery is one of the most spectacular and remote monasteries in the Himalayan world. Built into a natural cave in a sheer cliff face above the Tsarap River, it can only be reached on foot — a 2-day trek from Padum. The monastery has been continuously inhabited by monks for over 2,500 years and the views from its cave entrance over the gorge below are unforgettable.

The Indus-Zanskar confluence at Nimmu

Even without venturing deep into Zanskar, you can witness one of Ladakh's most striking sights just 40 minutes from our farmstay — the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers at Nimmu. Where the two rivers meet, the milky turquoise waters of the Zanskar flow into the darker blue Indus in a dramatic swirl of colour. The best viewpoint is from the road above Nimmu village.
