Shanti Stupa Leh: Sunrise Visit Guide and What to Expect

Perched on Changspa Hill at 3,740 metres above Leh, the Shanti Stupa is one of the most photographed landmarks in Ladakh — and for good reason. The gleaming white Buddhist dome, built in 1991 by Japanese Buddhist monk Gyomyo Nakamura and gifted to the people of India, offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Leh, the Indus Valley and the surrounding Himalayan and Karakoram ranges you will find anywhere.

Best time to visit — sunrise is magical

The best time to visit Shanti Stupa is at sunrise. As the first light of day touches the snow-capped peaks and slowly illuminates the Indus Valley below, the stupa glows golden against the darkening sky. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before sunrise for the best photography. The stupa is also stunning at sunset, when the mountains turn shades of amber, pink and purple as the light fades.

How to reach Shanti Stupa from our farmstay

From Nature Palace Farmstay in Chuchot Shama, Shanti Stupa is approximately 30 to 35 minutes by taxi. From Leh town centre, it is a 15-minute walk uphill through Changspa village — or a short taxi ride to the base — followed by a flight of 535 steps to the top. The climb is manageable for most people if they have acclimatised properly, but take your time and rest frequently at altitude.

What you will see at the stupa

The stupa is decorated with intricate Buddhist reliefs depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha. A small shrine room inside contains sacred relics. The circumambulation path around the base of the stupa is lined with prayer wheels and colourful prayer flags. The panoramic view from the top takes in Leh Palace, the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa (on the ridge above the palace), the entire Indus Valley and the mountains in every direction.

Visiting etiquette

The stupa is an active place of Buddhist worship. Always walk clockwise around the stupa and prayer wheels. Remove shoes before entering the shrine room. Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees. Early morning visits also mean fewer tourists, quieter conditions for meditation and photography, and cooler temperatures.
