Leh Market Guide: Shopping, Food and Local Life in the Heart of Ladakh

The main bazaar of Leh is one of the most fascinating market streets in the Himalayan world. Stretching through the centre of the old town below Leh Palace, the bazaar is a colourful mix of Ladakhi, Tibetan and Kashmiri culture — piled high with Pashmina shawls, thangka paintings, turquoise jewellery, dried apricots and prayer flags, while local restaurants serve steaming bowls of Thukpa and butter tea.
What to buy in Leh market
Leh's bazaar is excellent for authentic Ladakhi and Tibetan handicrafts. Look out for genuine Pashmina wool shawls and stoles (ask for a burn test to check authenticity), Thangka paintings on cotton or silk depicting Buddhist deities, turquoise and coral jewellery in traditional Ladakhi settings, handmade Tibetan singing bowls and prayer wheels, locally grown dried apricots, apricot oil and sea buckthorn products, and handwoven woollen fabric and traditional Ladakhi clothing.
Best places to eat in Leh
The bazaar area is full of excellent local restaurants serving both Ladakhi and international food. For authentic Ladakhi cuisine, look for small local dhabas serving Thukpa, Skyu, Tingmo (steamed bread) and butter tea. The main bazaar also has excellent Tibetan momos — steamed or fried dumplings that are a staple across the region. For fresh organic food, of course, the best meals are waiting for you back at our farmstay.
Leh Palace — above the market
Rising nine storeys above the market street is Leh Palace, the former royal palace of Ladakh's Namgyal dynasty. Built in the 17th century, the palace closely resembles the Potala Palace in Lhasa and offers extraordinary views over the bazaar, the Indus Valley and the surrounding mountains. The Archaeological Survey of India has been restoring it — allow 1 to 2 hours to explore.
