Black-Necked Cranes in Ladakh: Where and When to Spot Them

The Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) is one of the rarest crane species in the world, with fewer than 10,000 individuals remaining. Ladakh is one of the only places in India where you can see these magnificent birds and guests at Nature Palace Farmstay are perfectly positioned to spot them.

About the Black-Necked Crane

Standing over 1.2 metres tall, the Black-necked Crane is an impressive bird. It has a mostly white body, a black head and neck, and a distinctive red crown. In Ladakhi culture, these cranes are considered sacred and are deeply woven into local folklore and Buddhist traditions.

When Do Black-Necked Cranes Visit Ladakh?

Black-necked Cranes arrive in Ladakh in spring (April to May) and stay through the summer breeding season, departing in October. The best months to see them are May through September. They prefer wetland areas, marshy river valleys and agricultural fields near water bodies.

Best Spots to See Them Near Leh

  • Chuchot wetlands near our farmstay, the Indus distributary and surrounding agricultural land attract cranes regularly

  • Hanle Wetlands in the Changthang Plateau, the most reliable breeding location for Black-necked Cranes in Ladakh

  • Tso Moriri and Tso Kar lakes, high-altitude wetlands that support crane breeding
