Best Time to Visit Ladakh: A Month-by-Month Guide for Farmstay Travellers

Ladakh is one of India's most dramatic destinations and knowing when to visit makes all the difference between a dream trip and a frustrating one. Here is our month-by-month guide, written from 3 years of hosting guests at Nature Palace Farmstay in Chuchot Shama, just 25 minutes from Leh.

May — The Season Begins

May marks the start of the tourist season in Ladakh. The Manali-Leh highway typically opens in mid-May. Temperatures are pleasant around 15°C in the day and near zero at night. The landscapes are dramatic with snow still on the high passes. This is a great month if you want to avoid the summer rush.

June & July — Peak Season

June and July are the most popular months to visit Ladakh. Days are warm (20–25°C) and most roads and attractions are open. Book your farmstay well in advance during these months our rooms fill up fast. The Hemis Festival, one of Ladakh's biggest festivals, usually falls in June or July.

August — Milky Way Season

August is our personal favourite month at Nature Palace Farmstay. The skies are at their clearest, the Milky Way is directly overhead, and the Perseid meteor shower peaks in mid-August. The farmstay's organic garden is in full bloom, so the food is at its freshest. Migratory birds like the Bar-headed Goose and Brahminy Duck are active near our riverside location.

September & October — Best Weather, Fewer Crowds

September and early October are arguably the best months to visit Ladakh. The tourist rush has slowed, skies are crystal clear, and the rare Black-necked Crane can be spotted near wetlands around Leh, a special treat for birdwatchers staying at our farmstay.
